ADDING IT ALL UP
In part 1 of this series – and with particular reference to Matthew’s list – we pointed out that David was both patriarch of Israel and head of the Davidic kings who ruled in their own right.
It is because of this dual role of David, that Matthew’s list contains not 42 generations, but 41.
In part 3 of this series we concluded that the gospel of Matthew – in particular the genealogy listed in its first few verses – is the official testimony of Jesus Christ.
The testimony of Jesus will then be said to consist of 41 generations.
___
In part 6 of this series – and with particular reference to Luke’s list – we pointed out that with regard to Christ’s being a prophet (in fact “the Prophet”), David and Christ were effectively the same person – that David and Christ were the ‘bookends’ of what we have said is a succession of prophets running between them.
It is because of this ‘fusion’ of David and Christ – this consideration of the each of them as the equivalent of the other (and therefore the understanding that the each of them sums up (exhausts) the prophets running between them) – that we are naturally compelled to exclude the both of them from any counting of the number of such (intervening) prophets.
There are 41 names listed between David and Christ in Luke’s list, and therefore 41 prophets.
Consolidation
The recording of 2 only lineages of Christ, implies that the each (of the lineages) is equal to the other, and this simply by virtue of (the) default of any implication to the contrary: if both are the word of God, and there is no indication that the one is better than the other, or that the one must be focused on more than the other, then we must accept that although their contents differ, the (spiritual) substance of the one with regard to the scheme of God is no better than the (spiritual) substance of the other.
That is, the 41 generations listed by Matthew are equal in spiritual substance to the 41 prophets between David and Jesus listed by Luke.
Conclusion
The reason for the 2 markedly-different lineages of Jesus Christ, consists of the message that the predication of the each of them by the other produces:
“The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy” Rev 19:10.
For we are a spiritual people, and must worship God not in the letter, but in spirit and in truth.
Amen.
