There has been division of opinion over the years concerning the means by which Jesus is considered to be made of the seed of David.
Many have felt that because He was not physically descended from his earthly father Joseph, His mother Mary must have been descended from David and that therefore Luke’s list (see Luke 3), although not mentioning Mary specifically, in fact provides the genealogy of Mary, Joseph’s there-stated father Heli being in such case actually Mary’s father and thus merely his (Joseph’s) father-in-law.
Others feel that to be ‘legally’ descended from David (via Joseph) is good enough to qualify as one who is made of the seed of David.
Below we show the proper understanding on the matter, and thus by inference the deficiency in both these ideas.

MADE OF THE SEED OF DAVID
The primary relevant declaration comes from Paul:
“Jesus Christ … was made of the seed of David according to the flesh” Rom 3:1,
which is in accord with God’s promise to David:
“The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne” Ps 132:11.
Now Paul (also) declares at Gal 3:29 that if we be Christ’s then we are Abraham’s (spiritual) seed, his reasoning being that, just as a husband and wife are “one flesh” in (natural) marriage and thus the wife (necessarily) (along with her husband) the seed of her husband’s father, we who are “one spirit” with the Lord (see 1 Cor 6:17) are (necessarily) (along with our Husband) the (spiritual) seed of our Husband’s (spiritual) father1 Abraham.
1 Spiritual father as pertaining to the flesh. (See Rom 4:1.)
Conclusion
Jesus was made of the seed of David according to the flesh in that He was made of Mary who was (herself) the seed of David according to the flesh via her (indivisible) “one flesh” relationship with Joseph.
“For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh” Mk 10:7,8.
Amen.
